What's the latest on Deion Sanders' health? Shedeur Sanders says 'he'll handle this'
BEREA — Deion Sanders came out with the revelation on July 28 that the had been going through treatment for bladder cancer. That revelation had come after months of speculation regarding the health status of the Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback turned University of Colorado coach. That speculation had trickled down to questions for his sons, including Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The younger Sanders was asked prior to the Browns' 10th training camp practice Aug. 4 about the distractions that may have been caused as the family dealt with Deion's health issues. The 23-year-old fifth-round draft pick was "Well, I would say it's definitely stay focused mentally," Shedeur Sanders said. "Dad, he's one person that he'll handle his, we handle what we got to do. So it was something that we really ain't even have no formal conversation about because it was like, y'all need to focus on what y'all could focus on. Y'all can't sit here and feel sorry for me, and then that's affecting y'all doing that. So we all knew, because our family be talking in group chats and everything. "At the end of the day, y'all able to see and y'all able to understand everything on the field, off the field, you know what I go through. So then you got to be some type of human at some point in the way how I'm doing everything and how I'm handling everything that's thrown at me. You got no choice but to applaud that." The elder Sanders is back coaching football at Colorado, his third season in Boulders. The Buffaloes started preseason camp last week. However, prior to that, there were questions about whether or not Deion would stop by and watch his son at Browns training camp. However, in speaking on Michael Irvin's podcast recently, he said he was told by Shedeur not to attend. 'Shedeur told me not to come,' Deion told Irvin, his former Dallas Cowboys teammate. 'He didn't want me to come. He was like, 'Dad, I may get three, four reps in practice. I don't want you seeing that. No, I'm not where I want to be. Let me get where I need to be.' It's so funny because this is his first time ever, and he's dealing with it like a pro. He ain't mad. He ain't bitter. He's like, I got work to do but I'm going to put in this work. One thing, they're going to have to let me play, preseason is going to come. When preseason comes, watch me work.' Shedeur acknowledged on Monday that he did, in fact, tell his famous father not to stop by. For him, it was a simple reason. "Because I mean, I look at it at my own point of view," Shedeur Sanders said. "I don't want him coming to see me right now because I want to get to where I want to go, then for him to see me. I don't want him to come and see me get a couple reps and he's cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can't be proud of me right now. I got to get to where I'm going. And I know it's a lot I got to do to get there. So it's kind of like I just want everything that I'm doing, is just focus on this time and I don't want no distractions because we know out of media, we know how everybody would take it and take away from the team just from him being my own dad showing up. So it's a gift and a curse at the same time." Takeaways from Deion Sanders' press conference updating his health
Deion Sanders shocked the sports world Monday morning, announcing he was treated for bladder cancer earlier this year and is now cancer free. While it was not the traditional opening to fall camp that one expected, Sanders provided the Colorado team and its fans with much-needed clarity on his health ahead of the season. Sanders did not discuss anything directly related to the team, despite it being the first day of camp; instead, he focused solely on his health. With so much discussed during Monday's press conference, we broke down everything that was said into five key takeaways. Deion Sanders is cured of bladder cancer The most significant piece of news to emerge from the press conference is that Deion Sanders is cancer-free. After a relatively short battle with bladder cancer, Sanders and his oncologist, Janet Kukreja, said that he is cured after the removal of his entire bladder. The Colorado football program couldn't ask for better news going into the season, as Sanders' cancer battle is behind him. Sanders' cancer was caught early Despite not having symptoms, Sanders' cancer was caught early, allowing for the removal of the bladder before the cancer spread. The cancer was caught during a routine CT scan that Sanders received because of his history of blood clot issues. He chose a treatment plan beneficial to his life goals Sanders is a father of five and the football coach of a Power Four program; weekly visits to a hospital to receive cancer treatments did not fit his needs. Sanders instead chose to remove his bladder, which included the creation of a prosthetic bladder made from his intestine. Colorado football will be immensely motivated this season If playing for Coach Prime was not motivating enough, every player on Colorado's roster will now be playing for a coach who fought cancer a certain way so he could coach them this fall. That is inspirational for the entire locker room. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
